Now that Captains Keegan Bradley and Luke Donald have confirmed their teams for the 2025 Ryder Cup, who has the strongest team?
We could compare the world rankings for USA Ryder Cup Picks and Europe Ryder Cup picks, using the points per event that they gain in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR). However, they are based predominantly on stroke play events from the last 2 years, as there has been no match play event on the PGA Tour since the 2023 WGC Match Play.
To find which team is the best in match play we used the Ryder Cup rankings from the Match Play World Golf Rankings (MPWR). These are based on the points won per match across all team and individual match play events over the last 4 years. Anything over 0.500 is good, 0.550 very good and over 0.600 exceptional.
As you can see, whilst the USA team has a commanding average of just under 40% more points per event in the OWGR. However, when it comes to the different match play format, the average MPWR shows that the USA average is only 0.04 points per match higher than the European team. So the result of 2025 Ryder Cup could be much closer than it may appear.
Points shown are from Official World Golf Ranking and Match Play World Ranking as of 1 September 2025.
