Luke Donald Ryder Cup

Luke Donald Match Play Record

Luke Donald’s match play record stands out as one of the best of all time. The former World No.1 excels in team match play and individual match play golf as his record shows across singles, foursomes and four-ball match play formats.

The Match Play World Golf Rankings include every match play tour event ever played plus every Ryder Cup Rankings and here is how Luke Donald has performed by event and format.

Luke Donald Career Record

Played: 51, Points: 34.5, Points Per Match: 0.676

Luke Donald’s match play record is exceptional and his win ratio of 0.676 is second only to Arnold Palmer among players who have played over 40 games including Tiger Woods match play record.

As a European he does not play as many team match play formats as the USA who have the Presidents Cup as well as the Ryder Cup. His foursomes and singles record is phenomenal and as a former winner of the WGC Match Play he is a formidable match play golfer and has won all 4 Ryder Cups and 2 Walker cups he played in as a player.

Luke Donald Ryder Cup Record

Played: 15 (W10 L4 H1), Points: 10.5, Points Per Match: 0.700

Luke has played in 4 Ryder Cups since 2004 to 2012 and has been on the winning side every time. He has the best win ratio of any European who has played 10 games or more and easily makes the Greatest Ryder Cup team.

Within this his four-ball record is 0.500 from 3 games and 0.750 from 8 foursomes games where he teamed up with Sergio Garcia to win 5 out of 6 games.

Luke’s excellent singles record of 0.750 from 4 games matches his overall career record and shows why he is one of the best Ryder Cup golfers Europe has produced.

He has continued his winning streak as a Ryder Cup Captain in 2023 and looks to extend this when he leads Europe again in 2025.

Luke Donald Singles Record

Played: 40 (W27 L13 H0), Points: 27, Points Per Match: 0.675

Luke’s individual singles record is excellent in events like the WGC Match Play which he won in 2011. In that event he won 17 out of 26 games at 0.654 points per match.

In the Ryder Cup singles his record is even better at 0.750 (W3 L1). Who can forget the way he lead the team out in the singles at Medinah on 2012 to set up the greatest comeback in Ryder Cup history.

Luke Donald Foursomes Record

Played: 8 (W6 L2 H0), Points: 8.5, Points Per Match: 0.750

All of Luke’s foursomes play is from the Ryder Cup and he has an excellent rating of 0.750.

Luke picked Sergio as his favourite partner in the Ryder Cup and it is not hard to see why. He won 4 out of 5 games with Sergio Garcia, 1 out of 1 with Ian Poulter and 1 out of 2 with Lee Westwood.

Luke Donald Four-Ball Record

Played: 3 (W1 L1 H1), Points: 1.5, Points Per Match: 0.500

It seems harsh to say this was not his best format when Luke has a 50% record. However in the Ryder Cup he only played four-ball three times with Sergio (won), Paul McGinley (half) and Padraig Harrington (lost). Surprising given his short game, but maybe his lack of length counted against him. His contribution elsewhere shows that this was the right call though.

Luke Donald Walker Cup Record

Played: 8 (W7 L1 H0), Points: 7, Points Per Match: 0.875

Luke’s first amateur appearance was in the 1999 Walker Cup at Nairn where he went undefeated and the team won. He was also part of the GB&I team at the 2001 Walker Cup at Sea Island, Georgia where they defended the trophy.

Across both events, Luke won all four of his singles matches and only lost one of two foursomes matches with Nick Dougherty in 2001, after winning both games with Paul Casey at Nairn.
