
The original World Match Play Championship is a men’s invitational match play golf using singles match play format. The event started in 1964 and stayed at its home course of Wentworth until 2007 when it moved abroad until its last event in 2014. Whilst it was part of the European Tour schedule from the beginning, it only became an official European Tour event in 2004. It was well known for various sponsors including Piccadilly, Suntory, Toyota, Cisco, HSBC and Volvo. There were 28 different winners with Ernie Els dominating with 5 wins, followed by Severiano Ballesteros and Gary Player with 3 wins each.
