
Arnold Palmer match play record is among the best of professional male golfers. The King of golf was also the King of Match Play whether it was in team match play or individual match play golf across singles, foursomes and four-ball match play formats.
In addition to being a great match play golfer he also founded his own match play event, the Arnold Palmer Cup, where two student teams from the USA and GB&I compete in a Ryder Cup style match.

Arnold Palmer’s overall match play rating of 0.671 puts him at the top of men golfers who have played 40 games or more.
Whilst his singles record was excellent at over 60%, it was his exceptional pairs golf that shows what a great team player he was too.

Jack Nicklaus played in 6 Ryder Cups from 1969 to 1981 and tied the first match and won the next five. His first appearance at Royal Birkdale was remembered for Nicklaus’ concession to Tony Jacklin on the final green.
Within this his four-ball record is 0.611 from 9 games, but the key to his success was foursomes where he had an outstanding rating of 0.889 from 9 matches. Hence why his place is assured on the Greatest Ryder Cup team.
Usually by the time the matches reached the singles the result was a foregone conclusion, so maybe that is why Jack’s Ryder Cup singles record is only 0.500 from 10 games. Having famously lost to Brian Barnes in the morning singles in 1975, he asked to play him again in the afternoon and the result was the same!

In the Ryder Cup, Palmer was W6 L3 H2 for a rating of 0.636 from his six appearances between 1961 and 1973. He was playing captain in 1963 and also won as non-playing captain in 1975 in his home state Pennsylvania.
Palmer was also the first winner of the World Match Play Championship. He won the event in 1964 and 1867 and was runner-up in 1966 with a record of W9 L6 giving him a rating of 0.600 for that event.

In foursomes Arnold won 9 out of 12 matches in the Ryder Cup and was undefeated with a range of partners, namely Jack Nicklaus, Billy Casper, Dave Hill, Gardner Dickinson, Dow Finsterwald and Johnny Pott.

Arnold Palmer played in the US Amateur five times from 1948 to 1954. After making the last 16 in 1953, Palmer went all the way through the draw in 1954, defeating Robert Sweeny Jr in the final on the last hole.
